Chapter 6

CoCo

Diesel walks me downstairs afterwards and for the first time, I start to feel like we might have a chance at something more than just occasionally hooking up.

My conscience bothers me since I know I have to find a way to confront my past and come clean to Diesel. Looking at him in the rear-view mirror, I see the darkness of the past months cover his features again and suddenly know where I can go for advice.

It’s a bit of a drive, but by mid-afternoon I’m pulling through the gates of the Holy Redeemer orphanage where Diesel, Axel, Declan and several other Royal Bastards were raised. I’ve heard about it from both Jenna and Joey, but the warmth of the place surprises me. I suppose I thought it would be cold and dark, but it’s almost like there’s a heart beating within the walls.

“Hi.” A beautiful voice comes out of a small woman sitting on a bench in the hallway. “Who are you looking for?”

That question stops me for a moment because I hadn’t really thought this through.

“Um, maybe Sister Claudine?” I stutter, knowing that name from stories I’ve heard various people tell since I moved here.

“She went out to the garden,” she tells me before giving me directions.

“I’m sorry, what’s your name?” I ask, before turning away from her.

“I haven’t decided yet.” Her answer surprises a laugh out of me, which gets her laughing also. “I’m a novice, so I have some time before I pick a saint’s name and live with that.”

“And in the meanwhile, what do people call you?”

“Rose.”

“That is beautiful,” I tell her and she smiles brightly at me in return.

“Oh, could you not mention we spoke when you find Sister Claudine?” she asks me and I nod, even though I know confusion is spread across my face. “I’m supposed to be silent all this week.”

When I make the motion of zipping my lips and throw the key over my shoulder, she slaps her hand over her mouth to stop her laughter. Turning, I go in search of the head nun around here and shake my head, wondering if Rose will make it past her time as a novice.

The garden looks like it provides a good portion of the orphanage’s vegetables, but for whatever reason the nuns do not look pleased.

I call out the name of the nun I’m looking for and after sizing me up, she breaks away from the others and crosses to me.

“Yes?”

“I’m sorry to show up here like this, and I probably shouldn’t have, but I’m, well, I’m friends with Diesel and I’m worried about him,” I tell her. “I guess I’m looking for a little direction.”

“I would think Axel knows him better than anyone,” she says, looking a little uncomfortable.

“He probably does, but I’m an employee of the MC, not affiliated in any way and I don’t know who to turn to,” I tell her, about ready to leave since I doubt she’ll be willing to help me. “He’s working on something for them and I don’t know that they see how badly it’s hurting him.
